Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

my daughters father was killed in a motorcycle accident june2001. his friend informed me he had life insurance benefits for my daughter .he asked if the insurance had contacted me.they had not. i told him i wanted it in a trust.he said he would bring over papers for me to sign and assured me ''any big ticket items ie.school,camp ect. that a check would be given.i have'nt heard from him on the matter again.i don't know if there's an executor or the name of the ins co.or amount of policy.there's also property a buisness and vehicles.the sisters are running his buisness .do i have a right to be informed of my daughters finances? we were not married though he did pay child support.please shed some light on this mess.
