Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Inheriting letters

My Grandmother died about 20 years ago and my father collected all of her old letters that she had received. About 5 years ago he gave them all to me since I was researching our geneology. He never verbalized if they were a gift but he did express that he did not want them anymore as they cause sad memories for him. I loved the letters so much that I thought of writing a book that would include word-by-word what some of them say. My father and I have since become estranged and no longer speak...If I published such a book would my father then have the right to come forward and claim the letters are his? Would he be able to stop the publication or ask for royalties? Does he have any claim to the letters?

I don't know the answer to your question without doing some research.

I will tell you this ....

become un"estranged".

I don't know why this happens to families, and I am a victim of it myself. What I DO know is that it does no good for either of you. Take the time to heal the wounds, whatever they are, and don't stop until you have. He won't be here forever, and he is still a wealth of knowledge and memories for you.
