Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California
Judgment
I am getting calls from an attorney who claims my father, who passed away 6 yrs ago, has a judgement on a claim and they would like to help me obtain it. My siblings and mother have no idea what this is about, is it possible to research this myself rather than going through someone who is only in it for the money? I know my father would have told us about anything and I know this attorney was able to obtain his ss# and other data from the internet.

Re: Judgment
I get a dozen emails a day offering me my long lost inheritance. In all probability, of course, the calls are a scam. First of all, is the guy really an attorney? Check the state bar website (calbar.ca.gov). Don't pay him any money up front, or more than 10% on contingency, no matter what. Check the free national unclaimed property search at www.unclaimed.org . Google the "attorney's" name, address, phone number, and whatever phone number shows on Caller ID.
If there really exists a court judgment in favor of Dear Old Dad, he would probably be a plaintiff in some lawsuit. You could check the Superior Court websites for the counties your father lived in (e.g. www.lasuperiorcourt.org). In LA County there is a fee to search the "civil index," Orange County (www.occourts.org) is free.
