Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

I live in California. My sister passed away in Louisiana without leaving a will. She was receiving a small royalty check and I want to transfer it to my nephew. I was told by the company I needed to complete and file a Judgement of Possession before this can be changed. I have no idea whar I should do. Please help.
