Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

I was loaned some money by a friend to for some advertising of one of my businesses. It was a very friendly loan and had no contract or details regarding repayment. He unfortunately passed away 1 year ago, and now his mother is coming after me saying I owe her the money as she has gone through his emails.

Does she have a case?
