Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My long -term partner passed away in February 2009 - we were not married and live in California. . His attorney sent me a letter and a copy of the will and I am to inherit a large sum of money ($400K) from my long-term partner's estate one year after he deceased. His son is the executer of the estate. What is the process for an heir to receive their inheritence? Am I just sent a check on that date or must I appear before a probate court? Are taxes deducted?

If there is a probate then the son will send you a check once the probate has closed after deducting fees, costs. etc. If there is no probate you will still be sent a check. There are no taxes.

We can help with any other procedural questions.
