how long do i have to go after a will or estate after family member dies in california

It depends--for contesting a will, you can file your contest anytime before the will is admitted to probate, or up to four months after it's been admitted to probate (in the county court where the family member lived).
For trusts, the time to contest is normally 120 days from the time the notice under Probate code section 16061.7 is sent to heirs and beneficiaries of the trust.
