How do make agreement when hiring a lawyer on how to pay for their service

Time and charges. You are best to enter attorney fee contract for fees, based on an hourly rate or some part thereof, plus costs expended by the law firm, not contingency fee contract. The reason for the hourly method, is the agreement compels the lawyer to spell out the service provided and the rate charged. All lawyers in California are required to have fee/representation contracts witrh their clients.
