my mom has 30 acres in montana, but died in her home state of calif, where do we do the probate?

If she did not have a trust, then the probate of real property must occur in Montana where it is located. However, a probate will most likely have to be opened first in California and then the Montana probate is an ancillary probate for the assets owned in Montana. Did she own property - personal or real - in California?
