Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

my mom adopted a kid and she says that he has to be written into her living will... this kid now adult is in and out of trouble.. he is a thief and burglarized her house as adult and is horrible person..does he have to inherit part of her estate when she passes or can be be written out?. we are in California. thanks.

He is included as an intestate heir (if no will or trust), but your mother may certainly make or amend a Will or Trust leaving him less than her other children or omitting him altogether as a beneficiary (he does have to be mentioned in the documents.) She is not required to leave her estate to any of her children. It's HER decision to make.
