Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My mom died in January of this year. My step father [the trustee of my mom's estate] will not give me [a beneficiary of the trust] a copy of the trust or any information regarding the trust [like an accounting]. What can I do? How can I get a copy of the trust if he wont give it to me? He has not filed the will/trust with anyone nor has he filed taxes for my mom or notified the assessors office. I cannot afford an attorney but I am pretty smart. Is there a statute of limitations that applies to my situation? Do I have to put a request for the info in writing first and then go to court?
