My mom's sister lives in Oklahoma and is the Personal Rep of our deceased moms estate. The Rep has a cashier's check made payable to my siblings and I but we reside in Calif. The check is just under $5,000,but,We recently received a letter from the Reps attorney stating, we need to provide our Social Security numbers to our rep before she will forward the check to us. For privacy purposes,we do not feel comfortable. Please advise,is this legal?

If the estate has to file an income tax return, the tax return normally deducts any income earned by the estate that is distributed to the beneficiaries. In order to do this, the executor needs the social security numbers of each beneficiary.
