Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My mother passed away with about $70,000 in various bank accounts. After 40 days, using a small estate affidavit, I was able to have all of the funds transferred to me. However, she did not have health insurance and the hospital has been attempting to contact me by phone. Do I have any obligation to return their calls? Can they come after me for the money now that it is in my name?

probably, to the extent of the assets transferred from her name to you as her heir. But I wouldn't call them if I were you. (note, note legal advice)

my answer had a typo- should have read: This is NOT legal advice!

You are liable for her debts up to the value of the assets you transferred to your name. They can come after you and they will, until you clear it up with them.
