Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California
My mother passed away in 2001.
She had a 401k that had no beneficiary listed so my step father became the benficiary. But he then passed away a few months later. In 2004 the check was issued to my mother, but obvioulsy was never cashed.
I just recently found out about this and was curious how I go about collecting the money?

Was either estate probated with the court? Or, did they have a trust?
You should meet with an attorney to discuss your options and discuss the facts.
