Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My mother has passed and I am trustee on her trust do i request an Ein number for trust or estate Ein number. Some say estate as it is an estate I'm dealing with now that she has passed. Others say trust since she has a trust. The online application for Ein number offers both

If there is a probate , you need an EIN for an estate. If living trust only, you need an EIN for the trust.
