Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California
Our mother has become sick and we are now discussing long term care. Our father passed away 10 years ago and our mother has been re married for 9 years. Our stepfather is not allowing access to any financial information. He is also becoming agitated that medical questions are being asked by the siblings directly to doctors. We are beginning to question his intentions. He has made mention of just "leaving". We are concerned thought our mothers SS and our fathers SS are not going to be spent in her best interests and that he is going to liquidate and leave. Where do we begin to make sure she is properly taken care of financially?

The first thing to do is to speak with your mother and ask her what she wants to do. If she is able, she could grant powers of attorney to you to make financial and medical decisions for her. If she is not competent, then a conservatorship would be required.
