Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My mother-in-law died suddenly (went peacefully in her sleep). She was only 59 years old. She was single, with 3 adult children. She did not have a will. She lived with us for the five-years preceding her death, and only owned a couple of cars and her personal clothing, furniture, etc. She didn't have much money and no other assets. How do we close her accounts and such?

Unfortunately you are going to have to do at least a simple probate. Account holders and the DMV will not deal with anyone who has not been approved as the executor by the probate court.

Unless the total value of the accounts is under $100,000 and you get all three kids to sign small estate affidavits.
