Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

probate, etc...

My widowed mother died on March 6, 2007 without--name removed--will or trust, etc.

I am the ony surviving child. My younger brother passed away in late January 2007. He has 2 children and was never married to their mother.

My attorney tells me that I am entitled to 1/2 of my mothers estate and my brothers children are entitled to the other 1/2 even though their father died nearly 2 months before my mother. Is this accurate??? We reside in Los Angels county, CA.
