I have been designated as the executor in the will of my close friend now deceased. Under the law, what are my responsibilities and how must I account for them?

Thank you,

Re: Responsibility of the executor of a will

You have the responsibility to file the will for probate in the county where the decedent lived at the time of his death. The Court will require a notiification procedure for all heirs and those mentioned in the will. You have fiduciary responsibilities to collect the assets, pay bills, and distribute assets in accordance with the will. As an executor you will be entitled to a fee as prescribed by the jurisdiction's statute. You should hire an attorney to bring through the mass of requirements set out in the statute. His fees are paid by the estate.
