If you set up a trust and need to decide on successor trustees and don't have relatives close by what would you advise for a couple without kids

I recommend using a private fiduciary. You can find names for them in your area on the Professional Fiduciary Association of California. They are licensed by the state and their profession is to act as fiduciaries - trustees, agents, executors, etc.
It depends on who the beneficiaries are. You may want to consider the beneficiaries or other personal friends.
I would advise that you appoint someone you are comfortable with regardless of her location. If that someone happens to live in Texas, so be it. Most, if not all, duties can be accomplished from any where.
I need to know why you are continuing the trust administration after your demise. There are many ways of achieving your objectives of controlling your assets after you pass away other than incurring the uncertainty and expense of administering a trust. If you set things up the right way now, an attorney could take care of the disbursements you mandate shortly after you pass and that's it.
