Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

I am South African. My sister who was a resident of the United States passed away this year. She did not have a will. She owned property and was formally employed and had insurnace policies.

We do know that there is a lawyer handling this matter. It is being handled by a family member.

How does the process work and what is our position?

The process in probate is too lengthy to discuss in any detail here. Also, you do not tell us of any of the factual information needed such as whether she was married, had children, etc. You need to contact the attorney and ask what is going on and what if anything you might inherit. The fact that there is an attorney involved means there are other potential heirs. When you get the county in which probate has been filed, also get the case title, number, ad at least one hearing date.
