Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Trust for animals

I recently got some bad medical news and I am in the process of writing a will. I am trying to decide who to leave my bird to, however I would like to know she is taken care of. I want to leave 1/3 of my life insurance and other monies to her and I've been told I have to create a trust. How would I go about creating a trust for a bird and would I have to name the person I give her to ask the executor? Could I give her to one family and have someone else be in charge of the money? Call me paranoid, but I'd rather not give her to someone with money and have them kill her to get the money for themself.

Thank you
