widower died,no children, no will for house

My brothers wife died about 18 months ago,my brother died in an accident about 3 months ago.They had no children,but they left some money to his inlaws.My brother did not make a will or tell anyone what should be done with the house. the worth is about 300,000 . my mother who is somewhat demented, made a niece of his decessed wife execertor .the niece has told my mother that she as well as the inlaws will be taking about 70% of the 300,000 .It has gone through probate this is all the info my mother will give me.I would like to know if this is correct,I thought my mother would be soul benificary.any answers?
