Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My wife's mother was with a man for 27 years he had a stroke and can't taker of him self but she has no legal authority to help him. Also he has a kid 34 years old but she want nothing to do with him how can my mother-in-law get power of attorney.

Your mather's friend can only give consent to a power of attorney if he has the mental capacity to execute such a document and the physical ability to do so. Such a document should be notarized. I suggest your mother should meet with an attorney to discuss the specific facts of the medical condition in order to give a more thorough opinion as to capacity.

If the man doesn't not have capacity to understand what is going on, she can apply to the court to be his conservator.
