Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

will

My father passed away in 2004 and before he passed he said he had a will. After he died my step-mom never mentioned it. She benefited from it greatly and myself and 2 children didn't recieve a thing ive tried to find some sort of record but I wasnt able to find a thing and my step-mom has disappeared with her new husband and a great deal of money that was not rightfully hers. Since the will wasn't recorded how would I find out what it said? I was told the only way I could find out is to locate the lawyer who did it. Is this so and do you know how I would go about this? You see I have found out I have a terminal illness and I need to make sure my children are taken care. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: will

If the property was in joint names at the time of your father's death, it would transfer without a will or a probate. Your father could have contacted any attorney in California to draft his will. If he did not provide you with a copy, its likely he did not prepare one, only thought about it.
