Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

No will, no information

Unmarried father recently died. Adult step-sister (not adopted) only one to have access to his paperwork. I am the only ''legal'' heir, living in another state. He did not own real estate, had a small life insurance policy (of which both step sister and I are beneficiaries). This is all I know! How can I get other info - retirement accounts, etc.? Who has to file 2006 taxes? Who is responsible for his small estate, she or I?

There are no simple answers to your questions. If there is a probate proceeding in progress, that would be at the probate court in the county where he lived. I have the impression, however, that this did not go that far as of yet.

If your step sister is the one with access to everything, better make friends with her. From where you sit outside the state, there might not be much you can do on your own.

You could hire a Minnesota lawyer to represent your interests and look into things; but I have a notion that the cost might not be worth it. That would be up to you.
