How long does an executor of a will have to disperse funds/property to heirs after death. The will was executed in Iowa but the deceased resided in California.

The disbursement takes place only through a probate. The executor named in the will has to apply for letters of administration in the county in which the deceased resided, and in any county where there is real estate owned by the deceased.

Then disbursement is made after court approval.

Assuming that the estate is over $100,000 and no other probate exceptions apply, the executor can only distribute the decedent's assets after the probate court approves the distribution of those assets. If everything goes smoothly, the probate process takes about one year in the county in which the decedent resided.
