You are thinking of LETTERS TESTAMENTARY, AND OF ADMINISTRATION which are the documents issued by a probate court to the appointed personal representative of an estate that show that he or she has the authority to marshall the assets, resolve the debts and ultimately distribute the assets that go through probate.
