Assuming the relative lived and died in California, if there was a will, the law requires it to be filed in court within 30 days of death. The court records are public, so if you go to the courthouse they will be able to tell you if the will is on file. If there was a trust, and you are a beneficiary, the trustee is supposed to give you notice by mail. You might also ask around the family to see if anyone is acting as executor or trustee.
