Why would you resign just because they asked you to do so?? That's probably just about the worse thing you could do at this point. If they want you to leave, then you shouldn't resign, you should hang tight and they need to lay you off if that's what they want to do, but I wouldn't resign.

If you are unable to return to work, then you need to settle your case at a higher value. Don't make it easy on your employer and insurance company and resign at this point.
