in california can a employer lay you off while you are on workman's comp, released to go back to work but with limitations (no lifting).

The lay off has to be independent from your injury meaning that if there was a plan to terminate you along with several other employees then your employer may justify it, otherwise it generally viewed as very suspicious and you can file a labor code 132 (a) request for penalty.
