Legal Question in Workers Comp in California
I've closed a WC case and settled 3 years ago (got a lump sum). I've pretty much moved on with my life and then today I got a status conference notice from the Appeals board. what could this potentially be about? I've read all the fine prints and it looks like its mandatory for me to show up. should I get an attorney at this time or should I wait after the hearing?

Contact the local Board where the hearing is scheduled to find out what is going on. You must have filed a formal Application for Adjudication adnd they want to see what the status of the case is. You do not need an attorney but you should show up to see what it is about, unless you can get it resolved beforehand.
Check the notice of hearing under special instructions and find out if the issue is unpaid medical billing, which is probably the case. The special instructions should say applicant need not appear, or lien. Because the hearing has been filed as a status conference, there is no jurisdiction for the court to issue a finding. The only thing the court can do is set another hearing date if the issue is not resolved. Therefore, I suggest you skip the conference if you are satisfied with how events have progressed, in other words you got paid. If the court needs you to show up, it will set another date for a mandatory settlement conference. To assist the court simply write the court a letter saying you will not be appearing because the case has settled.
