Legal Question in Workers Comp in California

Family owned and operated business

In CA, do businesses that are owned and operated by entirely family members required to have worker's compensation insurance? If not then how does a company they are contracted to work for protect themselves if one of their workers gets injured on the job while working for us.

Thank you!

Re: Family owned and operated business

There should be a contract between the two companies laying out the responsibilities. Ususally the contracting company will require a copy of the workers' compensation declaration page to show coverage. While some companies are expempt from having compensation insurance, just being family owned and operated is not enough. Be careful if you are contracting with a company without insurance. You could wind up paying for any injuries.
