Hurt On the Job

I work for a City in southern California, and I hurt my knee on the job. I had to have surgery to remove my entire meniscus and had my Acl reconstructed. My knee is never going to be 100% again. And from some research I have been doing online I can guarantee I will have arthrtis. I also may have to change my extracurricular activities such as playing sports and or working out. There is also a chance I might need more surgery in the future. So my question is should I get a lawyer and file a claim, or do Government agencies tend to settle with their employee's in similar situations? I am only 28 years old, and I hope I don't come off as being money hungry; but i feel I need to look out for myself and my family. I really hope my knee will get better so I can return to work and resume my life. I had surgery 4 weeks ago and as per my Dr I can't put any weight on my leg for another 2 weeks. Complete recovery will somewhere between 6-9 months. Well I hope I gave you guy's enough info, and hopefully you are able to answer my question and give some options; of what I can do or expect.

You are entitled to compensation for Permanent disability, temporary disability benefits and past and future medical treatment. You are also entitled to vocational rehabilitation if you can't return to your job. You need to file an application for adjudication of claim in order to proceed with your case. The fact that your employer is a government agency is immaterial to your recovery. (unless you work for federal government in which they are under a different system.).
