Legal Question in Workers Comp in California

I am the owner of a hair salon and have 10 independent contractors working in this establishment. They pay rent ONLY . They have their own key and telephone and work as they wish. They make their own price list, collect their money from their clients and are responsible for their own taxes. I do not have an employee relationship with them whatsoever. Do I have to purchase workman comp. for them???

Based upon the facts you cite, it does appear that they are independent contractors so no WC coverage is needed, but be sure that you have adequate liability insurance to protect against suits by their customers and them for any alleged premise defects. I would post a sign in each space stating that they are independent contractors and if a customer has any problems with their work that person and not you must be contacted as you have no legal liability or effective manner in which to change how that person operates.
