Legal Question in Workers Comp in California

I am sole proprietor of my business, if I have my son help me for a week do I need Workman's Comp for him? Can I hire him as a Contractor? He has medical insurance.

If you plan to tell him exactly what to do, what hours to work, can fire him, make deductions from his paycheck--he is not an independent contractor. Unless he has some very technical knowledge, no one will believe he is a contractor.

Having Workers' Compensation insurance is a protection for the employee and employer. Callu up one of the big Comp. carriers such as State Compenstion Insurance Fund and find out if they think you need insurance coverage and how much it will cost. I suspect you do not for that short of a period of work.
