can you sue your employer for falling down the stairs on their property that they own

It would help if you could provide more information. If the stairs were defective and your employer had tried to repair them and was not in the business of stair repairs and you were not entirely at fault for falling, then you could sue in civil court. It is not likely all of these factors would exist. If any of those factors did not exist but you were injured in the course and scope of your employment, your only remedy is Workers' Compensation. If you fell at a location that the employer owns but you were not there for work purposes, and the employer was at least partly at fault, you would have a civil suit.
