Rules of Retailing Products
Is it legal to buy a product from a retail/wholesale outlet, alter it, So it becomes a different product (but still retains some of the characteristics of the orginal product) And resell it as a similar but very different product?

Certainly, so long as labelling is truthful -- you cannot obliterate the original trademarks affixed by the first manufacturer, and must ensure that consumers are not confused.
