Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Canada
Can Hydro cut me off in the winter ?
I have received a collection notice that Hydro is going to disconnect my service. I am unemployed and a single parent receiving no support and i have made payments although minimal I have always given what i can. I live in the country and on a warm day in the winter it is -10. Can hydro legally shut off my service when it is so cold outside? What can I do to stop this from happening?

Re: Can Hydro cut me off in the winter ?
Yes, in British Columbia they can. (In some other provinces they may be prevented from terminating service, depending on the time of year and the circumstances). You should immediately contact the B.C. government office that deals with social assistance in your area and explain the difficulty; you may be eligible for emergency assistance. You should also seek legal advice about obtaining child support. Please contact the Legal Services Society (legal aid)contact number in your area. You can find it in the white pages of the Telus directory; you may also want to contact a lawyer through the lawyer referral service of the British Columbia branch of the Canadian Bar Association; an initial consultation is $10. The number for a referral is toll free at 1-800-663-1919 (in B.C. only of course).
