Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Canada

Judgement

I had a bad debt of $181 in 1999, a judgement was issued against me for this amount. It is still in collections and it is 2005. When I checked my credit file it was for the amount of $1640. When I contacted them about paying this off they told me they would settle for $820. Can this be right? Do I have to pay this amount of money to clear the judgement? What options do I have, if any? Any advise in regard to my inquiry are greatly appreciated

Re: Judgement

In British Columbia it is extremely unlikley that the judgment could legally have grown to this amount as the amount of interest that can accumulate is limited. Amounts under $10,000 have only a limited amount of expenses added to them, called "disbursements" and normally no amount for legal fees is allowed. You should contact the legal aid office nearest you for summary advice, as the maximum debt is not likely to be anywhere near the $1,640 or $820. The contacts for Legal Aid are found in the Telus phone book under "Lawyers' Service Bureaus" and there is also the Lawyer Referral Service of the Canadian Bar which will arrange a low-cost initial advice interview. To contact them in B.C. call 1-800-663-1919 toll free.
