Child Age 14

Is a 14 yr. old child, legally allowed to sign a document without an adult present, when that adult parent never received a copy of whatever it is that he signed. This is a theft matter, and I had to be present to release him, but before I got there he signed 2 documents, and I only received one. I have no idea what the other one he signed is, and neither does he. I'm trying to get out of paying a $380 loss recovery bill. My son stole a .33 lighter from a dollar store and I think that the fine is utterly ridiculous. I was told by a security guard, that lifted his 4yr. tresspass notice on the grounds that the punishment did not fit the crime, that he should not have signed anything until I, the parent was present. Is this true, and do I have any chance of fighting this fine, on these grounds, or any other? Thanks so much.

It sounds like you or your son received a letter demanding payment. However, these demand letters appear to be idle threats and I would suggest ignoring the one you have. See www.golishlaw.com/answers/answe991.htm
