I was an employee of a company who has and had a bad gambling problem. I have taken funds to cover my habit from my ex employer and voided invoices and burried other things to get money. I have been caught and not working anymore. What kind of charges and punishment can i expect. I have made it clear i would try and pay things back but havent heard anything

Re: Possible theft charge

It is not clear whether your employer has reported the matter to the police. At this point, before you do anything else, you should find a criminal lawyer in your area to advise you and see about a solution that avoids any further problems: You should not discuss the details of your case with the police or your employer without speaking with a lawyer first, but make sure you do it right away.

As for the consequences if the police become involved, you should know that gambling problems are frequently the motivating factor for people to commit these kinds of frauds.

There is therefore that one important mitigating factor, but a theft from employer is considered a breach of trust, and thus you have an aggravating factor that might result in a jail sentence. Other considerations are the level of sophistication, the length of the period over which the fraud took place, and most important, the amount.
