Under the law in BC, you are an adult at age 19, and can not make your own decisions until that age. However in reality if someone is 16 or over and decides to move out on her own, there is very little that can be done to force her to move back home. The Ministry of Children and Family Development has a program to provide a small amout of money to assist children under the age of 19 to live independently. Whether or not an underage person living independently can force her parents to provide support is somewhat unclear, but it is not very likely that she can. In practical terms, once a 17 year old moves out, she is on her own - she can't be forced back home, but she has to provide for her own living. The Ministry can put her into foster care against her will, but if she simply leaves foster care, they can't do much. There are practical difficulties, however. Most landlords will not rent to someone who is too young to sign a contract, and obtaining any sort of credit is usually impossible.
