Last Name
My baby is due in March. The father and I are no longer together. who's last name should the baby have? If he takes his father's last name, will this afect me as the mother in any legal way? Do I lose any rights?

Re: Last Name
In British Columbia, there is a choice as the baby's surname. The rights of the parents are not affected in any way by what the baby's last name is. The rights involved are mostly those of the child, not the parents. You and the father are going to have to face the fact that you will be responsible financially and emotionally for this child, regardless of whether you are together or not. Neither one of you has any paramount claim to custody of the child; you should try and work out a joint parenting regime voluntarily or the court will impose one on you. Either of you may be awarded custody, or you may be ordered to parent the child half time each.
