Can you charge someone with breach of promise?

What my colleague Mr. McLeod said is quite true.

Furthermore, a "promise" could only really be enforced in civil court (not criminal) if you can show that it created a binding contract between two individuals. This would be quite difficult to do.

For policy and societal reasons, you contact force someone to carry out their promise to marry.

To charge someone means to accuse them of a crime; it has never been a crime to break a promise of marriage. In British Columbia, you may not sue someone for breach of promise to marry. This civil action was abolished years ago.
