Re: child custody
In British Columbia, access is a child's right; it is the right to continue a relationship with both parents. The child's right to have a relationship with you depends greatly on the nature and extent of the relationship you have established with the child. If it can be said that you are the father the child has socialized to; that is identified as the principal father figure or main role model, then the child likely has many rights to continue a relationship with you. This answer is based on British Columbia law and may NOT apply in other provinces. For a more in depth explanation much more about the relationship would have to be known. You should consult a lawyer practicing family law. You can find one in your locality by calling the Lawyer Referral Service of the B.C. Branch of the Canadian Bar Association at 1-800-663-1919
