In British Columbia, it depends on a number of factors; some, but not all of these are:

1. The length of the marriage, including any periods of pre-marriage cohabitation

2. Your income and hers, if she works outside the home

3. If your wife does not work outside the home, the reasons why not

4. Your health and that of your wife, both physical & mental

5. If there are children, and their ages, and whether or not any of them are disabled

6. Whether or not you obtained an education at a point in time when yhour wife was working outside the home to support the family
