Legal Question in Family Law in Canada

Divorce and spousal support

Two individuals seeking an amicable divorce and neither is asking for spousal support or child support file their divorce papers. In Canadian law a judge can arbitrarily rule that one spouse must pay spousal support even though there is no support requested from either party. How often does it occur that a judge rules that support must be paid after reviewing such divorce papers?
