As noted on the LawGuru website questions directed to this lawfirm must be answered with reference to British Columbia law. The law varies from Province to Province and may not be the same in other Provinces or Territories.

In BC you may give up parental rights, but the payment of child support has nothing to do with "parental rights"; child support is a right of the child and as it belongs to the child neither the father nor the mother can give up those rights. Quite simply a parent can't "give up" something that does not belong to him or her.

The child is yours and you have both the responsibility and privilege of paying support and you also ahve the right and duty to maintain a relationship with your child. It is almost always in the child's best interest to know, have a relationship with and be guided by both parents.
