Legal Question in Family Law in Canada

legal age to move out

I'm 17 years old (almost 18)and I live with my parents. I have finished grade 12 and I want to move out. The problem is that my parents will not let me until I have reached the age of 19. Unfortunately, I cannot wait that long. I want to move out as soon as possible. I have heard the legal age is 18, but if it is, then I dont believe it is fair that my parents are making me stay at home until I am 19. So all I would like to know is what the legal age is. Thank you.

Re: legal age to move out

In British Columbia you are old enough to move out without your parents' consent. There is no specific, pre-set age, but generally speaking a person over the age of 16 may move out regardless of parental wishes. The difficulties you may encounter are practical more than legal - you do not have the right to make many contracts and may find it difficult to find a landlord who will accept you as a tenant, and it is quite likely that your parents will not have to provide financial assistance. You may encounter considerable difficulty obtaining welfare. If houwever you are able to support yourself, there is little your parents can do to stop you moving.
